R-22 Phase Out and What to Expect
Starting in 2010, Environmental Protection Agency rules halted the manufacturer of air conditioning equipment that uses the refrigerant R-22. Scientists identified R-22, also known as Freon, as a substance that contributed to the depletion of the ozone layer. Older air conditioners using R-22 remain in operation, but repair costs are escalating due to the phase-out of R-22. Limited Supply Driving up Repair Costs The law will make the production or importation of R-22 illegal after Jan. 1, 2020.
